CZ: If Satoshi's Addresses Remain Inactive for Long After Quantum Upgrade, Relevant BTC Should Be Frozen

2026-06-20 07:13

Odaily reported that during an interview with Galaxy Research Head Alex Thorn on the Galaxy Brains podcast, CZ stated that quantum computing is not an insurmountable problem for Bitcoin. The community can address the associated risks by upgrading to quantum-resistant cryptographic solutions.

Regarding the approximately 1 million BTC believed to be held by Satoshi Nakamoto, CZ argued that "doing nothing" is not an ideal approach. He suggested that if Bitcoin completes a quantum-resistant upgrade in the future, the community could allow a transition period of 6 to 12 months. If the relevant addresses still do not initiate any transfers during this period, these addresses should be frozen under the new protocol, and the associated BTC should be removed from circulation.

CZ stated that without taking action, these BTC could eventually be acquired by the first entity to use quantum computing to crack the relevant addresses, which he considers an unjust distribution method. However, he emphasized that the final decision on how to handle this should still be determined by the Bitcoin community through consensus mechanisms such as voting.
