American Officials: US and Iran Reach Agreement on Memorandum of Understanding, Still Awaiting Trump's Final Approval

2026-05-28 14:18

Odaily Planet Daily reported that, according to two US officials who spoke to Axios, US and Iranian negotiators have reached an agreement on a 60-day memorandum of understanding aimed at extending the ceasefire and initiating negotiations on Iran's nuclear program. However, Trump has not yet given his final approval. Signing the memorandum of understanding would be the most significant diplomatic breakthrough since the outbreak of the war, but further intensive negotiations are still needed to reach a final agreement that addresses Trump's nuclear demands.

US officials stated that the 60-day memorandum of understanding would stipulate that shipping in the Strait of Hormuz will be "unrestricted." One US official noted that this means no tolls will be collected and no harassment will occur, and Iran must clear all mines in the strait within 30 days. (Jin Shi)
