Analyst: Prospects for US-Iran talks remain fragile

2026-05-27 11:54

Odaily Odaily, analyst Madison Cartwright of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia noted in a research report that the prospects for US-Iran talks remain fragile. Cartwright stated: "There are reasons to suggest that a diplomatic momentum does exist, which could lead to an agreement that reopens shipping through the Strait of Hormuz," but relevant details remain unclear. Cartwright added that there have also been recent small-scale skirmishes between the two sides.

Cartwright pointed out that regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, several key questions remain, including the amount of insurance required for vessels transiting the strait and whether Iran will impose transit fees. Nevertheless, Cartwright believes the US currently has little incentive to resume hostilities; instead, the US has shown a willingness to make concessions while continuing to exert economic and political pressure.
