OpenAI Adjusts Stargate Strategy, Abandons Building Its Own Data Centers, Computing Power Budget Reduced to $600 Billion

2026-03-17 06:13

According to monitoring by 1M AI News, OpenAI has made significant adjustments to its Stargate computing infrastructure project, abandoning plans to build its own data centers and instead opting to use third-party cloud services like AWS and Google Cloud for computing power. The company's total projected computing power expenditure by 2030 has been revised down from the previously estimated $1.4 trillion to approximately $600 billion.

This adjustment is primarily influenced by financing pressures. Since its proposal in 2025, the Stargate project has progressed slowly and failed to secure large-scale construction funding. OpenAI has withdrawn from related expansion negotiations in Texas and has reached a new cooperation model with SoftBank, where SoftBank will be responsible for energy and facility development, while OpenAI will secure computing resources through long-term leases.

Furthermore, OpenAI is shifting its computing power deployment towards the NVIDIA Vera Rubin platform, aiming to achieve its first gigawatt-scale computing capacity in the second half of 2026.
