British Media: Some European Countries Negotiate with Iran to Resume Shipping in the Strait of Hormuz

Odaily According to the Financial Times, some European countries, including France, have initiated negotiations with Iran to seek an agreement ensuring the safe passage of their vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, thereby resuming energy transportation in the Gulf region. Three officials familiar with the negotiations stated that multiple European countries have held preliminary discussions in an attempt to restore oil and gas exports without escalating the conflict. Two officials indicated that France is one of the countries involved in the talks. Another official mentioned that Italy has also attempted to engage with Iran on this issue. European countries have been striving to avoid direct involvement in the conflict, with some also criticizing the initial strikes against Iran by the United States and Israel. However, governments are deeply concerned that a prolonged blockade of the Strait could drive up energy costs for businesses and households. Another official noted that some European countries have expressed opposition to efforts to engage with Iran. British officials stated that the UK has not held direct negotiations with Iran regarding access to the Strait. Nevertheless, British Foreign Secretary Cooper, who is currently visiting Saudi Arabia, is discussing the issue of sustained oil supply with Gulf states.
