Thailand summons Iranian ambassador over attack on Thai cargo ship in Hormuz

2026-03-12 05:40

Odaily News Thailand's government has summoned the Iranian ambassador over an attack on a Thai vessel in the Strait of Hormuz and is making every effort to rescue three crew members still trapped on board. The bulk carrier Mayuree Naree was hit by an Iranian shell while passing through the strait empty on Wednesday. Among the 23 crew members, 20 were rescued by the Omani navy after abandoning ship in lifeboats. The shipowner stated that the three missing individuals are believed to be trapped in the engine room at the stern, which was hit and caught fire. Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that diplomatic personnel in Muscat are collaborating with Oman on the rescue efforts and have already summoned the Iranian ambassador for talks. The Thai Foreign Ministry expressed "deep concern" over the situation in the Middle East, noting that the incident was triggered by US-Israeli attacks and Iranian retaliation, which could escalate regional tensions and pose a serious threat to innocent civilians. It urged all parties to respect international law, exercise restraint, and de-escalate the situation. (Jin10)
