Trump Retaliates Against Spain for Refusing to Lend Base for Iran Strike, Will Impose Comprehensive Trade Embargo on Spain
Odaily News U.S. President Trump threatened on Tuesday to impose a comprehensive trade embargo on Spain, after the European and NATO ally refused to allow U.S. forces to use its bases in Spain for missions related to striking Iran.
Trade law scholars stated that, according to the IEEPA, which the Supreme Court used last month to overturn several of Trump's tariffs, Trump could indeed implement a trade embargo. However, he must declare a national emergency and determine that Spain poses an "unusual and extraordinary" threat to the United States.
The Spanish government issued a statement in response, saying that the United States must respect the autonomy of private enterprises, international law, and the U.S.-EU bilateral trade agreement. (Jin10)
