Sam Altman says will revise agreements with defense department to restrict domestic surveillance use
Odaily News OpenAI CEO Sam Altman forwarded an internal letter stating that the company is negotiating with the U.S. Department of Defense to revise agreements, clarifying that AI systems must not be intentionally used for domestic surveillance of U.S. citizens and nationals, and prohibiting tracking or monitoring through the procurement or use of commercially obtained personally identifiable information.
The letter mentioned that the Department of Defense confirmed that related services would not be used by intelligence agencies, and if services are required, contracts would need to be separately amended. Sam Altman stated that the company will participate in policy discussions through democratic processes, will refuse to execute orders it deems unconstitutional, and noted that some technologies are not yet mature, and will gradually improve security safeguard mechanisms with relevant departments.
