US Media: Trump Administration Accelerates Strategy Formulation to Retain Tariff Revenue
Odaily News According to Politico, officials from multiple departments within the Trump administration are accelerating the development of legal strategies to retain billions of dollars in tariff revenue even after the Supreme Court rules the related tariffs as "illegally imposed." Multiple sources familiar with internal discussions stated that preliminary considerations include using policy measures to discourage companies from applying for refunds, preventing the government from actually paying out refunds, or otherwise retaining at least a portion of the tariff revenue. One such consideration is to declare that the tariff funds collected over the past year constitute legal revenue under a new tariff framework that the government is preparing to implement based on different legal authorities. Another proposal would allow companies to receive priority processing in what is expected to be a lengthy refund queue, but only if they agree to waive a portion of the refund amount to the government.
