Hearing on Legal Application Issues for 60,000 Bitcoin Money Laundering Case Scheduled for July: Controversy Erupts Over UK High Court's Designation of Lead Law Firm

2026-02-25 02:10

Odaily According to reports, the hearing on the "legal application issue" for the 60,000 Bitcoin money laundering case (i.e., whether Chinese law or UK law should apply in this case) is scheduled for July. The UK High Court has designated Fieldfisher, which has been involved in the case for a longer period, as the lead law firm for the hearing. However, this proposal has sparked controversy. Some law firms are concerned that Fieldfisher may gain an informational advantage, such as access to the list of large-scale investment victims, and even attempt to "poach clients" by improperly "inducing" victims to switch law firms. The judge clarified that this arrangement does not appoint Fieldfisher to represent all victims in asset recovery applications. It only authorizes them to represent all victim groups in communications with the court regarding the "legal application issue." Other law firms will continue to handle their respective clients' claims. Appointing a lead law firm is intended to improve litigation efficiency. (Caixin)
