South Korean Media: Bithumb Mistakenly Distributed 125 Bitcoins, Not Yet Recovered; Over 80 People Have Completed Cashing Out

2026-02-09 01:15

Odaily News According to reports, cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb made an operational error while distributing rewards to 249 users, mistakenly inputting a total of 620,000 Korean won as 620,000 bitcoins. This led to the erroneous distribution of bitcoins worth 60 trillion Korean won. Although the exchange recovered 99.7% of the assets, 125 bitcoins, valued at approximately 13 billion Korean won, remain unrecovered.

It has been confirmed that over 80 individuals have cashed out the erroneously received bitcoins. Among these, about 3 billion Korean won has been transferred to personal bank accounts, while approximately 10 billion Korean won was used to purchase other cryptocurrencies. Bithumb is currently communicating with the affected users to request the return of the funds. For users impacted by market fluctuations, Bithumb plans to fully compensate for the selling price difference and provide an additional 10% compensation, while also waiving transaction fees for one week. South Korean financial regulatory authorities have announced that they will conduct inspections of internal controls and asset verification systems across all exchanges.
