South Korean Prosecutors Lose Massive Amount of Seized Bitcoin, Potential Losses Could Reach $48 Million

2026-01-22 09:42

Odaily According to reports, the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office in South Korea recently discovered during a routine inspection of seized assets that a large amount of Bitcoin related to criminal cases under its custody was missing. The estimated loss amounts to hundreds of billions of Korean won (reports mention internal rumors of around 700 billion won, approximately $48 million).

It is reported that the prosecutors stored information such as Bitcoin-related passwords on mobile storage devices. This loss may have occurred during the inspection process due to mistakenly accessing so-called "scam websites." The official response from the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office regarding this matter is "cannot be confirmed." Currently, the prosecutors have initiated an internal investigation into the incident. (Ohmynews)
