OpenAI Announces Data Center Energy Cost Control Plan
Odaily News OpenAI announced the "Stargate Community plan" on Tuesday, aimed at "achieving energy self-sufficiency" and ensuring its operations do not increase local community electricity costs. The "Stargate" project is a multi-year plan costing $500 billion, designed to build AI data centers for training and inference, and has received support from major investors including Oracle. As energy access becomes a key constraint on AI development, several tech companies are directly investing in power infrastructure to support larger and more numerous data centers. OpenAI stated that each "Stargate" site will have a tailored community plan, "which will be guided by community input and local needs." "Specifically, this may include providing entirely new dedicated power and storage facilities for the project (fully funded by the project), or adding and paying for new energy generation and transmission resources."
