Massachusetts Judge Rules to Prohibit Kalshi from Offering Sports Betting Business in the State
Odaily News A Massachusetts judge, Christopher Barry-Smith, ruled on Tuesday that the state has the authority to prohibit prediction market Kalshi from offering sports betting within its jurisdiction. This ban could take effect as early as this Friday. If implemented successfully, it would become the first such ban in the United States.
In the ruling, the judge stated that any company wishing to operate a sports betting business in Massachusetts must comply with state laws, including obtaining the necessary license from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC). Previously, Kalshi argued that it is regulated by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and therefore state authorities have no jurisdiction to intervene. However, the judge rejected this argument. Kalshi began offering sports betting in January 2025, and by May of the same year, its sports business accounted for 70% of its total revenue. (DLnews)
