OpenAI Deploys AI Age Prediction Model to Restrict Teen Access to ChatGPT
Odaily News OpenAI announced that the company has begun deploying an AI-based age prediction system designed to identify ChatGPT users under the age of 18 and automatically enforce content restrictions. The system assesses user age by analyzing signals such as account age, active hours, and behavioral patterns, rather than relying solely on the date of birth provided during registration. Accounts identified as belonging to teenagers will be subject to strict restrictions on violent and sexually sensitive content. OpenAI stated that if adult users are mistakenly identified, they can complete age verification by uploading a selfie or ID document through the third-party service Persona to restore access. Additionally, this update includes new parental control features, allowing parents to set quiet hours and receive notifications when the system detects their child experiencing significant emotional distress. The system is currently live in the ChatGPT consumer plan and is expected to be rolled out in the European Union in the coming weeks.
