Hassett: If I Lead the Fed, I Can Persuade My Colleagues

2026-01-16 00:29

Odaily News Next Federal Reserve Chair frontrunner Hassett dismissed concerns that he would struggle to convince other Fed officials to support his views if appointed. Hassett stated on Thursday: "I'm tough enough to win the debate. Anyone who comes to the White House and faces every possible question for five consecutive years—like I have—is tough enough to handle hostile situations and help people understand why they are right or wrong."

Hassett has consistently argued that Fed Chair Powell and his colleagues have been too slow to cut interest rates, aligning with Trump's view. Fed observers note that interest rate decisions depend on majority votes within the Federal Open Market Committee, and a Trump-nominated Chair may not necessarily build consensus on significant rate cuts. Hassett reiterated that Trump believes the Fed under Powell's leadership has shown political bias, cutting rates before the 2024 election but halting the easing cycle after Trump took office in 2025. "He thinks sometimes their decisions appear partisan." (Jin10)
