Trump Tariffs Face Judgment, U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent Predicts "Final Ruling"

2026-01-09 14:40

Odaily According to reports, the U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to reconvene this Friday (January 9th), and may issue a ruling regarding the legality of the global tariffs implemented by the Trump administration. This high-profile lawsuit is not only a significant test of presidential power but will also have far-reaching impacts on the global economy. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent spoke at the Minnesota Economic Club on Thursday, strongly supporting the current tariff policy. Bessent stated that Trump's "strategic use" of tariffs has successfully encouraged both domestic and foreign companies to increase direct investment in the U.S., hire workers, and build factories. Facing the risk that the Supreme Court might overturn the current tariffs, Bessent revealed that the government has already formulated contingency plans. Even if the court rules that Trump abused the IEEPA, the government could still impose tariffs based on Section 301 and Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, as well as Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
