Historic Moment: Central Bank Gold Reserves Valuation Surpasses U.S. Treasury Bonds
Odaily News According to data released this month by the World Gold Council, official U.S. overseas gold holdings currently total over 900 million troy ounces. This data, primarily sourced from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), largely reflects the situation as of the end of November, with some countries' data as of October. Calculated at the gold price on November 30th, this gold is valued at $3.82 trillion. In comparison, as of October, the total value of long-term and short-term U.S. Treasury bonds held by governments outside the United States was approximately $3.88 trillion. If calculated using year-end prices and assuming non-U.S. central banks have not reduced their gold holdings, the valuation of gold reserves held by non-U.S. central banks by the end of 2025 is estimated to be around $3.93 trillion. This signifies that the scale of gold reserves has officially surpassed the holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds. (Jin10)
