Vitalik responded to the proposed ban on AI data centers: Instead of suspending them, let's create a "computing power pause button".
Odaily Planet Daily reports that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin responded to US Senator Bernie Sanders' call to halt the construction of large data centers for AI. Vitalik stated that there is merit to the discussion of "slowing down" AI development, but he believes a more valuable solution than a simple pause is to build a "pause button" capability—the ability to reduce available computing power by 90%–99% within 1–2 years at a more critical time in the future. He also believes a distinction should be made between hyperscale computing clusters and consumer-grade AI hardware, favoring a slower pace and more decentralized development, but pointed out that related regulatory measures could be easily circumvented, potentially failing to effectively achieve the goal.
