According to a report by the South China Morning Post, the Malaysian Ministry of Energy stated that the national electricity company TNB suffered losses exceeding US$1.1 billion between 2020 and August 2025 due to electricity theft by cryptocurrency miners. In a written response to Parliament, the Ministry of Energy and Water Transformation indicated that 13,827 locations were found to have illegally modified or bypassed electricity meters for mining purposes during this period. Although Malaysia lacks specific legislation targeting cryptocurrency mining, such activities violate the Electricity Supply Act.
