OpenAI completes restructuring, Microsoft becomes major shareholder with 27% stake
Odaily Planet Daily reported that OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it had completed its capital restructuring, establishing a structure in which it holds a controlling stake in its for-profit business as a non-profit organization. OpenAI stated that its non-profit organization is now renamed the OpenAI Foundation and holds approximately $130 billion in equity in its for-profit division. OpenAI said that its for-profit division has now become a public welfare company called OpenAI Group PBC. Under the new structure, the OpenAI Foundation will hold a 26% stake in the for-profit division, and current and former employees and investors will hold a total of 47%. Microsoft has invested in OpenAI since 2019, with a total investment of more than $13 billion. Microsoft expressed support for the restructuring and said that its investment in Open AI Group PBC is now valued at approximately $135 billion, equivalent to 27% of the company's diluted shares. OpenAI wrote in a blog post: "The more successful OpenAI is as a company, the higher the value of the equity of the non-profit organization, and this value will be used to fund its public welfare work."
