Experts warn that quantum computing may threaten Bitcoin security and trigger market "liquidation"
Odaily News Cryptocurrency experts warned at a private lunch during the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas that advances in quantum computing are posing an increasingly urgent threat to Bitcoin. Experts say powerful quantum computers could crack Bitcoin private keys in the next few years, putting about $42 billion worth of Bitcoin at risk and potentially triggering a market "liquidation event." Google's latest research found that the quantum resources required to crack RSA encryption are 20 times less than previously estimated, further exacerbating concerns. "The Bitcoin community needs to reach a consensus and find ways to mitigate the threat before this truly becomes an existential crisis," emphasized Casa co-founder Jameson Lopp. A variety of solutions have been proposed, including introducing quantum-resistant encryption addresses and limiting the number of transactions to vulnerable addresses.
