Solana Labs spin-off Anza proposes Alpenglow plan, which is called the biggest change to Solana core protocol

2025-05-20 00:03

Odaily News Anza, a development studio spun out of Solana Labs, has announced what they call the “biggest change to the Solana core protocol ever.” According to the announcement, the high-throughput Layer 1 blockchain will feature a completely redesigned underlying architecture called Alpenglow.
“We believe the launch of Alpenglow will be a turning point for Solana,” Anza’s Quentin Kniep, Kobi Sliwinski, and Roger Wattenhofer wrote in a white paper released Monday. “Alpenglow is not only a new consensus protocol, but also the biggest change to the Solana core protocol ever.”
The upgrade will replace Solana’s existing TowerBFT proof-of-stake consensus mechanism and proof-of-history timestamp system with new components called Votor and Rotor. (The Block)
