Hester Peirce: SEC is paying close attention to cases in the crypto industry and hopes to take new approaches to policy making
Odaily News U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Commissioner Hester Peirce said the agency is closely monitoring cases against cryptocurrency companies in an attempt to set a new benchmark in regulating digital assets.
“Over the last few years, enforcement cases have been used as a way to develop regulatory policy; that’s atypical,” Peirce said in an interview Tuesday. “We’re trying to get back on track to really use other tools to develop policy.”
She declined to say whether the SEC would drop its case against Binance entirely, saying she could not discuss specific cases. She said the agency needed to “sort out” its cases against cryptocurrency companies, but did not say whether it would suspend or drop other cryptocurrency cases. For example, the agency sued Coinbase Global Inc. in 2023, accusing it of operating an illegal exchange. She added: “We have to decide what to do next based on the specific circumstances of each case.” (Bloomberg)
