Hester Peirce: SEC is waiting for the chairman to be appointed before setting the cryptocurrency regulatory agenda

2025-02-11 23:55

Odaily News Hester Peirce, head of the U.S. SEC's cryptocurrency working group, said in a speech at a Federalist Society panel that it would be "premature" for the SEC to begin developing a cryptocurrency regulatory agenda before the Senate confirms its chairman.
Mark Uyeda has assumed the role of acting chairman following the departure of Gary Gensler on January 20, but the Senate is expected to vote soon on President Trump’s nomination of former SEC Commissioner Paul Atkins.
Peirce added: “Acting Chairman Uyeda is doing a great job and the agenda is working – we haven’t stopped working, but we assume that if Atkins is confirmed as chairman, he will be in place very quickly and setting the agenda.”
She also said the SEC is "trying to figure out" a path forward for developing rules for digital assets. The appeals court issued a ruling in January saying it would not order the SEC to develop definitive rules for cryptocurrency companies, but largely agreed with Coinbase's position that the SEC made an "arbitrary and capricious" decision in denying its rulemaking request.
