CZ's lawyer: CZ should be sentenced to probation instead of imprisonment

Odaily News In the sentencing statement submitted, lawyers for Binance founder CZ countered that CZ should be sentenced to probation instead of imprisonment, arguing that he paid a fine and was "very willing to take responsibility." The lawyers said that in similar cases of violating the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), no defendants were sentenced to imprisonment. They recommended that CZ be sentenced to probation, which may include placing him under house arrest in his home in Abu Dhabi. The defense document stated that CZ was not aware of, and had never been clearly informed of, specific transactions involving criminal funds that occurred on the Binance platform, and that these transactions accounted for only a very small part of Binance's trading volume. CZ is not at risk of reoffending, so he should be sentenced to probation instead of imprisonment. (CoinDesk) Earlier, the U.S. Department of Justice lawyers stated in the sentencing memo submitted on Tuesday night that CZ should be sentenced to 36 months in prison and pay a $50 million fine after pleading guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act last November. According to CZ's plea agreement, he initially faced up to 18 months in prison. The Justice Department argued in its sentencing brief on Tuesday that the “scope and impact of CZ’s misconduct were significant” and therefore “an enhanced sentence should be appropriate.”
