Odaily News: American prosecutors expressed in a letter on Tuesday that the Department of Justice still plans to charge SBF with an "illegal campaign donation" scheme during the trial in October. Two weeks ago, prosecutors had stated that they couldn't bring those charges against SBF due to treaty obligations.
According to the letter, prosecutors will submit a superseding indictment next week, bringing seven charges against SBF in preparation for the October trial. Each of these charges will be from the original indictment, with only the campaign donation charge excluded due to the extradition treaty between the United States and the Bahamas.
The letter to Judge Lewis Kaplan stated that the Department of Justice plans to include the campaign donation charge against SBF as part of the telecommunications fraud charges. "The superseding indictment will explicitly state that SBF is still charged with the illegal campaign donation scheme, which is part of the original charges of fraud and money laundering," the Department of Justice stated, adding that using client funds for campaign activities falls under the telecommunications fraud charges outlined in the original indictment.
"The defendant also concealed the source of their fraudulent income through political donations as part of the original charges of money laundering. As outlined in the government's forthcoming motion, the defendant's illegal campaign donation activities will be admitted as direct evidence for the trial charges," said the Department of Justice. Previously, it was reported that SBF is currently scheduled for trial on October 2, with charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit securities fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. He will then face another trial in March next year for five additional charges, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud, conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business, and conspiracy to bribe foreign government officials.
