What is the Arrow Glacier upgrade?

Written by: Tim Beiko, Ethereum Foundation

The Ethereum network will be scheduled toBlock number 13,773,000 carries out "Arrow Glacier" upgrade, is expected to beDecember 8, 2021 (Wednesday)conduct. Exact dates may change due to variable block times and time zones. Please upgrade your nodes by Wednesday, December 5th, 2021 to account for variable block times.

What is the Arrow Glacier upgrade?

Similar to the previous Muir Glacier upgrade, this Arrow Glacier network upgrade alsoWill change the parameters of the Ethereum Ice Age/Difficulty Bomb, delaying it by a few months. It was also delayed in the previous Ethereum Byzantium upgrade, Constantinople upgrade, and London upgrade. No other changes will be introduced for Arrow Glacier at this time.

The difficulty bomb will only affect PoW networks, and thus only exists on the current PoW Ethereum mainnet and Ropsten testnet. With Ethereum's recent progress towards transitioning to PoS, it was decidedDeferring only the difficulty bomb on the Ethereum mainnet for now, and try our best to run the transition of PoS on the Ropsten test network before the difficulty bomb explodes on the Ropsten test network.

Frequently Asked Questions

>>Is there anything I need to do as an Ethereum user or ETH holder?

If you use an exchange (such as Coinbase, Kraken, or Binance), a web wallet service (such as Metamask, MyCrypto, or MyEtherWallet), a mobile wallet service (such as Coinbase Wallet, Status.im, or Trust Wallet), or a hardware wallet (such as Ledger, Trezor , or KeepKey), you don’t need to do anything unless your exchange or wallet service notifies you to take additional steps.

>>Is there anything I need to do as a node operator or miner?

put yourUpgrade the Ethereum client to the latest version, as above.

>>What if I am a miner or node operator and I am not involved in this upgrade?

If the Ethereum client you are using is not updated to the latest version, once the upgrade occurs, your client will sync to the old chain before this fork upgrade. You will be stuck on an incompatible chain following the old rules, and you will not be able to send ETH or operate on the upgraded Ethereum network.

>>What is Ethereum's network upgrade?

Network upgrades are changes to the underlying protocol of Ethereum that create new rules to improve the system. The decentralized nature of the blockchain system makes network upgrades more difficult. The network upgrade of the blockchain requires cooperation and communication with the community and developers of various Ethereum clients to ensure a smooth transition.

>>What happens during a network upgrade?

After the community agrees on which changes should be included in the upgrade, the changes to the protocol will be written into the various Ethereum clients (such as geth, Erigon, Besu, and Nethermind). Protocol changes are activated at specific block numbers. Any nodes not upgraded to the latest ruleset will be discarded on the old chain, where the old rules still live on.

>>Why is this upgrade named "Arrow Glacier"?

While we've been using the Devcon name for our network upgrades lately, we had a previous upgrade that specifically delayed the difficulty bomb, so we've decided to change that. In the previous upgrade that specifically delayed the difficulty bomb, in order to highlight the essence of this upgrade (delaying the "Ice Age"), we used a glacier name, which is Muir Glacier (Muir Glacier).

Thanks!

A big thank you to the Ethereum community, and to all Ethereum developers across all clients and platforms for their input, ideas, and contributions. This may be the last network upgrade before Ethereum transitions to PoS.

Also, big thanks to Harshil Gudka for this cover image.
