FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

>>As an Ethereum user or ETH holder, do I need to do anything?

This upgrade is purely an upgrade to the Beacon Chain consensus mechanism and will not affect end-user accounts, contracts, and state secured by the Ethereum PoW chain.

But if you run your own beacon node, you need to upgrade your node. See the "What do I need to do as a beacon node operator not running a validator?" section below for details.

>>What do I need to do as a beacon node operator not running a validator?

Download the latest version of the beacon node client you are running, see above.

>>What do I need to do as a validator?

Download the latest version of the software you're running, see above. Reboot your node using the standard reboot procedure, following the instructions in the release.

Note that node software supporting standalone validator clients will also need to be upgraded and rebooted to this component. Please read the warnings and instructions in the official release announcement.

>>What if I am a validator or node operator but I am not participating in this upgrade?

If the beacon node client you are running is not upgraded to the latest version, once this upgrade occurs, your client will be synchronized with the beacon chain before this fork upgrade. You'll be stuck on an incompatible chain following the old rules.

If you run a validator, the validator will not be able to participate in the upgraded consensus, but will continue to operate on the upgraded beacon chain network. This will cause this validator to face penalties related to the upgraded mainnet chain.

>>What will happen during the beacon chain network upgrade?

These protocol changes will be written to individual clients after the Ethereum community reaches a consensus on which changes should be included in the upgrade. Changes to the beacon chain protocol are activated at a certain epoch number. Any nodes not upgraded to the new ruleset will be discarded on the old chain, and the old rules will likely continue to exist on the old chain.

>>Why is this upgrade named "Altair"?

After community discussion and voting, each client team decided to use a stellar name for each upgrade, and the order of the upgrade names is alphabetical.

Thanks!

Thanks!

A big thank you to all the researchers, engineers, and community members who put in a lot of work into this first Beacon Chain network upgrade.
