Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin believes that the Ethereum network is about to scale close to 100 times, and predicts that Optimism will release its second-layer solution in the next few weeks.

On the Tim Ferriss Podcast, Buterin pointed out that Eth2 developers are working on merging with Ethereum’s chain, and believes that layer-two solutions can support the Ethereum network until sharding development is complete.

"Rollup is coming very soon. We have full confidence that by the time we need to scale further, sharding will be ready for a long time," he said.

rollp is a second-layer solution that processes and stores transaction data on a designated sidechain before batching transactions to the Ethereum mainnet. The solutions are designed to alleviate ethereum's scalability issues, as intense competition for bandwidth on the ethereum mainnet has resulted in skyrocketing fees.

When Eth2 is fully launched, Eth2 will use sharding to ensure scalability, and Buterin believes that rollups will be able to meet medium-term needs - emphasizing that rollups can increase Ethereum's transaction throughput by 100 times:

“The thing to remember is if you have rollup and you don’t have sharding, you can still scale 100x, right? The blockchain can still handle 1,000 to 4,000 transactions per second, depending on the complexity of those transactions .”

Buterin expects Optimism to launch its fully Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible rollup in "about a month or so," and also highlighted the significant progress Arbitrum has made with its own EVM-compatible rollup.
