Ethereum Founder Rarely Supports Trump, Calls for Decentralized Social Channels
In just a few days before the U.S. Congress was hit, multiple social platform accounts of U.S. President Trump were banned. More than a dozen social software, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, have banned Trump, and TikTok, which considers itself a "Mars enterprise," has also banned Trump's account. The social software Parler, which gathered a large number of Trump supporters, was not spared, and was blocked by the three major platforms including Apple, Google, and Amazon.
Yesterday, Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, the world's second largest public chain, posted multiple messages on Twitter, condemning Twitter's ban on Trump's account. He directly shouted to Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, that Twitter's ban was inappropriate:
"To me, Jack's banning of Trump violated the principles of liberal democracy (Jack was not elected by the vote), but this (banning) behavior is also a victory for the principles of liberal democracy (separation of powers)... ...Twitter's users are not limited to the US...Twitter's 'natural politics' don't fit perfectly with any single country."
Parler's censorship of speech content is relatively loose. Although a large number of Trump supporters have gathered, Vitalik believes that software such as Parler should never be blocked:
"Wanting to shut down Parler is worrisome. Apple, Google and Amazon cloud are more 'common infrastructure providers' than a social media site. Parler definitely has a right to exist, period."
Vitalik called for the use of blockchain social media, and did not forget to advertise his social platform on the public chain:
“This is where the crypto community can get involved. @peepethapp (on the Ethereum chain) is a good experiment. Another good experiment is the decentralized forum orchestrated by Kleros. Kleros has demonstrated superiority: it correctly confirms Deng won the election..."
Jack Dorsey had not responded as of the time of publication. As an encryption-friendly social platform, Twitter has been criticized for its content censorship. Tesla founder Musk said sarcastically yesterday: "Many people should be unhappy that West Coast companies have become the actual judges of freedom of speech."
Although the Twitter ban on Trump has attracted attention from all walks of life to the censorship of centralized social platforms, how to find the balance between freedom and obligation will become a difficult problem besides technology. And will the social platform on the mainstream public chain become the next mainstream DAPP trend? let us wait and see.
