Cryptocurrency startup Tagomi, which has raised a total of $28 million in venture capital, will become the newest member of the Libra Association, TechCrunch has learned. A formal announcement is scheduled for Friday or next week.
Tagomi is a cryptocurrency brokerage whose platform helps large traders and funds easily access the cryptocurrency market. Just a few days before this news came out, the Canadian e-commerce platform Shopify has officially joined the Libra Association, ending the passive trend of the association's member companies "only retreating but not advancing".
TechCrunch has contacted the Libra Association and has been confirmed by Facebook's communications team.
Joining the Libra Association means Tagomi will contribute at least $10 million to the development of the cryptocurrency. In addition, Tagomi will also need to operate a node to verify transactions on the Libra Blockchain.
Last November, The Block hadto reportto report
Coinbase has held “late stage” acquisition talks with Tagomi, according to several people familiar with the matter. Since then, there has been more news that Coinbase has acquired Tagomi for $150 million, but then Coinbase Vice President Rachael Horwitz denied the acquisition rumors. It is still unclear how the deal will progress.
Tagomi and Campbell will provide Libra with technical and policy support to make the cryptocurrency more secure and comply with international regulations. This is critical for the Libra Association to gain regulatory approval and launch on schedule in 2020. Politicians in many European and American countries have repeatedly attacked Libra in hearings or in the media, and expressed concerns that the plan may promote money laundering, persecute privacy, and undermine the stability of the global financial system.
If successfully joined the Libra Association, Tagomi will become its 22nd official member. The current membership status of the association is as follows.
Full Members: Calibra (Facebook), PayU, Farfetch, Lyft, Spotify, Uber, Illiad SA, Anchorage, Bison Trails, Coinbase, Xapo, Andreessen Horowitz, Union Square Ventures, Breakthrough initiative, Ribbit Capital, Thrive Capital, Creative Destruction Lab, Kiva, Mercy Corps, Women's World Banking, Shopify, Tagomi, of which, except for Shopify and Tagomi, the other 20 are founding members when the Libra project is officially announced.
