Brazil's Cryptocurrency Demand Reaches $14.68 Billion in H1 2026, Stablecoins Account for Over 90%

2026-07-30 22:54
Odaily Planet Daily News: The Central Bank of Brazil disclosed that cryptocurrency purchases in Brazil reached $14.68 billion in the first half of 2026, a 135% increase compared to $6.24 billion in the first half of 2025. The statistical scope includes transactions of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins processed by registered Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs).

In June, cryptocurrency purchases in Brazil amounted to $2.54 billion, up from $1.48 billion in June 2025; stablecoin purchases in May approached $2.632 billion, a 158% increase compared to May 2025. Fernando Rocha, head of the Statistics Department at the Central Bank of Brazil, stated that the country's cryptocurrency market has passed its initial phase, is expanding, and exploring use cases.

Fernando Rocha stated that dollar-pegged stablecoins are driving demand growth, accounting for over 90% of demand, and are used for payments and cross-border settlements. The Central Bank of Brazil will classify VASPs under Class 3, and after the regulation takes effect in January 2027, relevant institutions will need to comply with the same requirements as securities brokers, securities distributors, and foreign exchange brokerage firms.
