1178 top AI company employees sign joint statement calling for international cooperation to control the pace of frontier AI development

2026-07-29 04:05

Odaily Planet Daily News 1178 employees from leading AI companies have jointly released a statement titled "Pacing the Frontier," calling on the US government to support international cooperation in developing technologies and governance tools to actively regulate the development of frontier AI.

The statement notes that leading global AI companies believe the future may soon see the realization of automated AI research. While it is impossible to accurately predict how this will accelerate AI progress, there is a risk that AI capabilities could rapidly outpace human understanding and control.

The signatories state that industry, governments, and society need to preserve the option to "buy time" to address emerging risks, improve safety measures, and strengthen regulation. However, due to competitive pressures faced by both companies and nations, there is currently a global lack of governance mechanisms capable of actively controlling the pace of frontier AI development.

The statement points out that frontier AI agents are already capable of discovering and exploiting real software vulnerabilities, and in the absence of safety measures, could be used for large-scale cyberattacks.

Employees from multiple institutions, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta, have signed the statement, believing that an international coordination mechanism is needed to reduce potential risks while advancing AI development.
