US and Iran have conflicting views on negotiations; experts say no prospect of resuming talks in the short term

2026-07-11 10:01

Odaily Planet Daily News On July 10 local time, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on his social media platform "Truth Social" that Iran hopes to continue "negotiations" with the U.S., and the U.S. has agreed to continue talks. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Baghaei stated on the 10th that Iran has never proposed seeking negotiations with the U.S., but agreed to allow mediators to visit Iran. Middle East expert Wang Jin said that dialogue between the U.S. and Iran is unlikely to resume in the short term because, for both the U.S. and Iran, the state of conflict is still ongoing.

For both sides, the current foundation of trust is very fragile, making it impossible to establish a suitable atmosphere for dialogue in the short term. More importantly, public opinion in both the U.S. and Iran is skeptical about the resumption of dialogue between the two countries. Especially considering that the U.S. launched related attacks during the funeral of Iran's former Supreme Leader Khamenei, it also means that Iran will find it difficult to fully trust the U.S. in the short term. Therefore, resuming dialogue in the short term is very difficult, but this does not mean that the mechanisms for peace have been completely lost. On the one hand, countries such as Qatar, Oman, and Pakistan are continuing their mediation efforts, hoping to encourage and help establish communication channels between the U.S. and Iran.
