U.S. Media: Iran Implements New Regulations for the Strait of Hormuz, Requiring Vessels to Declare to the "Persian Gulf Strait Authority" Before Transit

2026-05-18 10:16

Odaily Planet Daily News According to CNN, a document shows that Iran has formulated a series of new rules for vessels wishing to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, ignoring U.S. warnings and continuing to advance its institutionalized efforts over the control of the waterway. The document, titled "Vessel Information Declaration," was issued by Iran's newly established "Persian Gulf Strait Authority" (PGSA). All transiting vessels must fill it out to ensure safe passage. The PGSA document contains over 40 questions, requiring vessels to declare their name, identification number, former name, country of origin, and destination. The document also requires the declaration of the registered owner, operator, and the nationality information of the crew, as well as providing cargo details. The above information must be submitted via email before transiting the strait. A PGSA email stated, "Complete and accurate information is crucial for processing vessel transit applications," and "the applicant shall bear any consequences arising from providing any incorrect or incomplete information." It is currently unclear whether any shipping companies have applied for transit permits from PGSA. Analysts point out that this move may expose shipping companies to the risk of U.S. sanctions.
