Myanmar scam AI industrialization exposed: Starlink becomes key infrastructure, crypto payments and OpenAI/Google models integrated into toolchain
Odaily Planet Daily News A survey report leaked from a scam compound in Myanmar reveals that global telecom fraud is rapidly evolving toward an "AI industrialization + cross-border crypto payment" system. Fraud networks use cryptocurrencies for fund transfers and leverage automated tools based on large language models for multilingual script generation, identity伪装, and emotional manipulation. According to the investigation, these systems extensively utilize OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini at a functional level to support "large-scale social engineering scams." On the financial side, funds are quickly laundered and transferred through on-chain payments and cross-border channels, forming a dual-layer structure of "AI customer acquisition + crypto settlement." This gives the scam industry a high degree of automation and cross-border proliferation capabilities. Additionally, Elon Musk's Starlink has become the top network service provider for the Myanmar scam compounds, with US ISP providers carrying nearly one-fifth of the compounds' traffic.
In response to the allegations, OpenAI stated that scammers' usage of ChatGPT is highly similar to that of ordinary users, making identification challenging. However, the company has been banning approximately 100,000 suspicious accounts per month through behavioral pattern recognition and risk control systems. Google said its AI models have safety guardrails in place and emphasized its commitment to "responsible AI development" to limit the use of its tools for illegal purposes such as fraud.
