The plaintiff claimed that the parties agreed to reimburse business expenses in Bitcoin and demanded that the defendant repay 7.806501396 BTC. Since the defendant did not appear to defend, the court focused on whether it had the authority to directly order the repayment of the debt in Bitcoin. The judge stated that although English law has recognized Bitcoin as property, the court was uncertain whether it had the power to directly issue a judgment for Bitcoin payment and inclined to convert it into a compensation amount in GBP at the prevailing market price at the time of trial. This case is seen as the first instance in English courts where the issue of directly repaying debts in BTC has been substantively examined, highlighting the legal gaps in how related contractual obligations can be enforced even after digital assets are recognized as property.
