CertiK Report: 2025 Cryptocurrency ATM Scam Losses Reach $330 Million, AI Technology Intensifies Crime Escalation
According to a report by Web3 security company CertiK titled "Skynet Cryptocurrency ATM Fraud Report," losses from such scams in 2025 have reached $330 million, representing a year-on-year increase of approximately 33%. This has become one of the fastest-growing categories of financial crime in the United States.
Currently, there are approximately 45,000 cryptocurrency ATMs globally, with 78% located in the United States. The report indicates that criminal groups are upgrading their methods using technologies such as AI voice cloning and deepfakes. In 2025, the profitability of AI-driven scams was about 4.5 times that of traditional methods. Data shows that 86% of the total losses from this type of fraud in the U.S. in 2025 came from individuals aged 60 and above, making the elderly a primary target for ATM fraud.
Furthermore, criminal networks are adopting a "divide and conquer" strategy, inducing a large number of small transactions to evade regulatory oversight. CertiK warns that the currently reported losses are just the tip of the iceberg, and the industrialized operations of transnational criminal organizations will continue to escalate the threat.
