Odaily reported that cryptocurrency trading platform Coinbase disclosed that a routine infrastructure update last week, due to an undetected Kubernetes resource name conflict, mistakenly modified the Istio ingress gateway component, leading to approximately 50 minutes of service disruption. Coinbase stated that customer funds were not at risk.
The outage occurred between approximately 12:37 and 13:25 Eastern Time, affecting retail, institutional, and developer platforms. Some users were unable to complete deposits, withdrawals, or off-platform transactions, Coinbase Card debit card purchases were declined, and credit card purchases were unaffected.
The interruption also affected on-chain swaps on Base and Solana conducted via Coinbase DEX, with transfer and settlement delays or failures for Coinbase Exchange and Prime customers. Coinbase stated that it will add naming conflict checks, separate recovery tools from managed infrastructure, and test emergency access procedures more frequently.
