US media reveals inside story of US-Iran ceasefire agreement: Iranian President and Central Bank Governor jointly persuade the Supreme Leader to "sign quickly"

2026-07-04 12:57

Odaily Planet Daily News According to four officials familiar with the details of the meeting, in the final stages of the negotiations, when Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was hesitant to approve the preliminary ceasefire agreement, Iranian President Pezeshkian visited him. The Iranian President told the Supreme Leader that the economic situation is dire, the US maritime blockade is strangling Iran, and if he rejects the agreement, he will resign. Additionally, Iran's Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati also sent a letter to Khamenei, stating that the country is facing a serious budget crisis and that, if the maritime blockade continues, key food and medical supplies will be exhausted by the end of August.

In his letter, Hemmati explained that it is impossible for Iran to sell oil on the required scale or find alternative trade routes. These statements played a key role in Mojtaba's final decision to support the agreement. In a brief public statement, he said that although he "in principle" opposes the agreement, if the President obtains the support of the Supreme National Security Council, he has instructed the President to proceed. Pezeshkian stated that the committee approved the agreement with 12 votes in favor out of 13. (Jin Shi)
