OpenAI proposes offering the U.S. government a 5% stake

2026-07-02 04:12

Odaily Planet Daily News OpenAI is in discussions with the U.S. government regarding a plan to sell a 5% stake. The artificial intelligence startup, valued at $852 billion, is seeking financial support from the Trump administration to clear political hurdles. According to two sources familiar with the matter, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes that having the public hold company shares is the best way to share the benefits of artificial intelligence, and he proposed a stake of this size in early conversations with the government. The proposed plan would involve other U.S. AI companies selling similar stakes, but it is currently unclear whether other companies are willing to do so. OpenAI and its main competitor, Anthropic, have recently delayed the release of their cutting-edge models due to U.S. government scrutiny. Meanwhile, some Republicans and advisors to Trump favor stricter regulation of the industry. (Financial Times)
