Iranian sources say Iran insists on retaining control over the Strait of Hormuz
Odaily Planet Daily News According to two high-level Iranian sources, Iran is determined to seek international recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz and its right to charge fees for vessels entering and leaving the Gulf, even if it means resorting to force. Under an interim agreement reached with the United States this month aimed at ending their three-month conflict, Iran agreed to allow free passage for ships through the strait within 60 days. However, Iran believes that the wording of the agreement allows it to continue controlling which vessels may pass and the navigation routes of these vessels within this narrow waterway.
The sources stated that Iran is also determined to secure long-term formal recognition of this control once the interim agreement expires; until a consensus is reached on this issue, its negotiators will not shift to other contentious topics in the peace talks with Washington. (Jinshi)
