Iranian Media: Iran-US Agreement Clarifies Management Rights of the Strait of Hormuz

2026-06-15 10:07

According to a report by Odaily Planet Daily, Iran's Fars News Agency, citing a source, reported that the Iran-US Memorandum of Understanding was revised in its final stage before being reached, "clearly and unambiguously" emphasizing the management rights of Iran and Oman over the Strait of Hormuz. The report states that the latest text of the memorandum explicitly stipulates that the "future management of maritime navigation services in the Strait of Hormuz" will be jointly decided by Iran and Oman. The specific use of the term "maritime navigation services" in the text implies that the United States effectively recognizes Iran's right to charge fees to passing vessels for related services.

According to the report, based on the text's content, Iran has only agreed to grant vessels a 60-day free transit period. After the 60-day period ends, Iran plans to provide services such as navigational safety, maritime security, environmental protection, and insurance, thereby generating revenue from the passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and using it for the country's economic development. On this issue, Iran has previously conducted necessary coordination and consultations with Oman. The report did not provide a specific explanation for the 60-day free transit period.
