Iran military spokesperson: Management of the Strait of Hormuz rests with Iran; U.S. imposition of unauthorized shipping lanes violates memorandum

2026-07-12 11:32

Odaily Odaily reports, citing Iran's Tasnim News Agency, that Iranian military spokesperson Alirahmani stated on Sunday that, according to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, the responsibility for managing maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz lies with Iran.

He stated that the U.S. attempt to impose an unauthorized shipping lane south of the Strait of Hormuz violates its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. He noted that Washington has a long history of failing to fulfill international commitments, and the current understanding between the U.S. and Iran faces the same issue.

Alirahmani added that Iran is adopting a peaceful and cooperative approach by developing joint navigation arrangements for the strategic waterway in collaboration with Oman. He stated that U.S. interference undermines regional security and urged Washington to adhere to the memorandum, respect regional stability, and consider the interests of regional countries.

Akbarinia also warned that every U.S. attack on Iranian islands, coastal areas, or facilities has received a resolute response, and the U.S. action on Saturday night was immediately retaliated against. He further stated that Iranian armed forces have continuously enhanced their combat readiness before and after the ceasefire, using the ceasefire period to improve military capabilities while constantly updating operational plans to address various scenarios. He concluded by warning the U.S. to cease its destabilizing intervention in the region. (Jin Shi)
