The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran declared that only through Iranian-designated routes can the Strait of Hormuz be safely transited. The Revolutionary Guard's Navy added that all ships seeking to pass through the strait must coordinate with the Iranian military via the international maritime distress frequency Channel 16, a requirement that effectively places the permission of the Iranian military at the core of all commercial shipping through this strategic chokepoint.
