Jaguar Land Rover says
, which is testing software designed to allow drivers of its cars to earn the cryptocurrency IOTA as rewards for sharing data. The company is said to be developing smart wallet technology to be installed in its cars. The company is testing the technology at Jaguar Land Rovers software engineering facility in Shannon, Ireland, where engineers have equipped several cars, including the Jaguar F-PACE and Range Rover Velar, with the smart wallet feature. It has not yet been determined when it will be released.
All future models will be downloaded to their systems with the smart wallet software. The company hopes to use IOTA tokens to encourage drivers to automatically report some useful data information to navigation providers or local authorities, such as traffic jams, providing some fast-passing roads or potholes.
And if the car participates in a car-sharing scheme, the driver can also get corresponding rewards. Tokens earned by drivers can be used to pay for tolls, parking and electric vehicle charging.
The full name of the IOTA token is MIOTA, which is an open source distributed account that focuses on payment and communication between machines on the Internet of Things. IOTA co-founder and board co-chairman Dominik Schiener said on April 26, “Smart wallet technology can be very well adapted to all new cars. IOTA wants to achieve interoperability with all these different players. So, no Jaguar Coin, no BMW Coin, there is only one universal machine economy token.”
