Gitcoin grants matching round 9 is underway! Even a very small donation can mean a lot because it means supporting a project. It makes more sense to get many small donations than a few large ones.

For your convenience, I've put together a collection of projects I'm supporting in this round. It is mainly biased towards small Eth2 ecological projects, but there are also other projects that I think are valuable. Welcome to Gitcoin to support my project "Ethereum 2.0 Specification Notes"

Also, in addition to this round of Gitcoin, the Ethereum Foundation has also launched an Eth2 bounty campaign"Build Something That Improves Eth2"first level title

Interestingly, the stream sometimes becomes a river, or even a torrent. The main topic of discussion in the community this week is to convert Ethereum to PoS as soon as the technology is mature.

In earlier versions of the Eth2 roadmap, the eth1->eth2 merger would have been rolled out later, as part of or after phase 2. Over time, new ideas emerge from the community, Eth2 R&D evolves, and the transition to PoS moves forward.

Four streams are currently converging into one unstoppable flood.

The first is miners against EIP-1559. Miners were more or less expected to oppose measures that would reduce miners’ mining rewards, however some of their opposition was deemed too aggressive. solution? Speeding up the transition to PoS solves this problem once and for all.

The second is more recent: Some in the art world strongly object to the huge energy drain caused by the NFT craze. These objections were not entirely targeted. But, to be honest, PoW is kind of embarrassing.

Third, a proposal was updated in the Eth2 specification repository this week on how to reliably implement the eth1->eth2 merge. The realization of the merger is getting closer and closer!

Immediately afterwards, Vitalik published the article "Achieving Fast Merging by Modifying Fork Selection", explaining the most streamlined version of merging. Fast merges are possible by this method, but the means are quick and "dirty" (since polluting the beacon chain with RLP), but a subsequent update will fix this.

Above, the Ethereum Foundation R&D team is busy sending some signals that they want to complete the merge work as soon as possible.

I don't like PoW. I was attracted to the concept of PoS five years ago, and for the past three years, I have devoted myself to advancing PoS. I'm all for speeding up the transition to PoS reasonably and achievably.

However, if my voice is to be heard in this uproar, I feel the need to call for caution. So far, the progress of Ethereum 2.0 work has not been hindered by governance issues. As a result we've been able to iterate and innovate rapidly, resulting in amazing progress. Then the final direction is to merge all assets on the Eth1 chain (plus the market value of DeFi, which is already worth 200 billion US dollars of ETH) into the beacon chain.

It is already well known that Eth2 developers have had little involvement in Eth1 governance. I worry that Ethereum governance issues will have a huge impact on Ethereum.

Let's think about how long it took for EIP-1559 to be officially included in the hard fork (this was last week), let alone implemented. The idea of 1559 was first mooted in mid-2018. The entire process of the Eth2 beacon chain from conception, design, construction, and deployment is carried out simultaneously with the promotion of EIP-1559 and its inclusion in the hard fork. And 1559 is not considered a major change in technology. It’s an incredible fact that the Ethereum protocol layer didn’t even get a single upgrade in 2018. Personally, this is not what I like to see.

Public Service Announcement: Stakers! Time to upgrade your Eth1 nodes! The Ethereum network is ready to perform the Berlin upgrade. Readers using the Pyrmont testnet, please upgrade your Eth1 Goerli nodes on March 17th. Readers who have already staked on the mainnet beacon chain, please make sure to upgrade your Eth1 nodes before April 14th.

The most recent big news is the release of a draft of the executable Beacon Chain specification, The Merge. My colleague Mikhail Kalinin's leadership on this matter has been excellent: hopefully the discussions and activity around the merger will pick up pace in the coming weeks.

The merger itself is not a duplication of Eth1, nor is it a scaling solution for Ethereum. However, Dankrad Feist proposed a method to achieve effective scaling (5-10x) through a combination of merging and increasing the block size.

The goal of the Mousse emulator is to do in Eth2 what Ganache did in Eth1. It can simulate and interact with Eth2's data shards, which is very effective for developing rollups.

The Eth2 Rekt bot on Twitter is used to track slashing events. The state of no forfeiture incident has lasted for 36 days.

Altair

Altair is the name of the first upgrade of the beacon chain protocol, voted by the community. This upgrade will happen around the middle of the year (June if all goes well).

This week's developer meeting spent a lot of time discussing Altair. Actually, we took something away. It was originally planned to only modify the verifier record every 64 epochs, but now it seems that it is not necessary, and it is better to keep things simple. However, changing the sabotage penalty for each validator to be calculated separately remains.

Danny's "eth2 Update Quick Facts" series is now renamed Finalized no. 23. We'll find another time to talk about the Eth2 revision; there's been a lot of debate for this first installment. BTW, I was Finalized by"z"Offended.

Jacek Sieka made a particularly valuable series of tweets: Beacon chain state analysis for block 601183. Why this block? Check out his twitter!

I see this question being asked a lot: why am I still fined even though my validator did attestation. How did this happen? The rewards and punishments section of the Beaconcha.in knowledge base has a brief explanation of this issue.

Rocket Pool is coming soon. The Rocket Pool quiz held by EthStaker on March 14th was a fun way to get a quick overview of the protocol. LogicBeach also produced a Rocket Pool video explainer series.

Elias Simon from Bison Trails has started an excellent series of deep dives with developers on the Ethereum 2.0 client team. First up was Raul Jordan from Prysmatic Labs, and I joined him for another session on behalf of the Teku team. It was a pleasure talking about Eth2 with Elias, he did a great job putting everything into one article. Looking forward to the next version!

EthStaker's "February Recap" — summarizes a lot of work going on, and lays out plans for more.

The latest installment in the Valid Points series from Coindesk. Last week, Coinbase. This week is mainly a discussion of EIP-1559's place in Eth2.

Also, I am now officially the host of Coindesk's Mapping Out Eth2.0

This March 4 issue briefly introduces myself

In the March 11th episode, we talked about withdrawal key updates and other things. Hope this goes well - this is a new challenge for me, so bear with me if I get it wrong. Christine, Will and the entire team are very professional. On a more formal note, I'm blown away by what Coindesk has accomplished.
