After months of planning, "Berlin" is finally here! This is the latest upgrade following the upgrades of Ethereum Istanbul and Muir Glacier, and it is planned to be launched at block height 12 244 000 of the Ethereum mainnet. We expect this to happen around Wednesday, April 14, 2021, but due to block time variability, the exact date may change.
Before deploying to the mainnet, this upgrade will be carried out on the three major testnets of Ropsten, Goerli and Rinkeby. The entire release schedule is as follows:
Ethereum node operators should upgrade their nodes before the fork block time on the network they want to join. Due to the variability of block times, it is recommended that client updates be done at least a few days before the expected date. See the following sections for the appropriate client version to upgrade to.
To be compatible with the Berlin upgrade, node operators will need to upgrade the version of the client they are running. Each client version listed below supports the Berlin upgrade across all Ethereum networks (testnet and mainnet).
Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) Included in the Berlin Upgrade
The Ethereum Berlin upgrade introduces the following 4 EIPs to the Ethereum network:
Reduce the gas cost consumed by ModExp (0x00..05) precompilation;
EIP-2929: Increase gas cost of state access opcodesWhen used in a transaction for the first time, the gas cost of SLOAD, *CALL, BALANCE, EXT* and SELFEDESTRUCT will be increased;A new transaction type is introduced, which is an envelope (Envelope), which can support multiple transaction types more easily;
EIP-2930: Optional access list
Add a transaction type that contains an access list, and a list of addresses and storage keys that the transaction plans to access. This mitigates some of the gas cost increases introduced by EIP-2929.
To learn more about each EIP, please refer to the "EIP" published by Ethereum Cat Herder

FAQ
Why was the name "Berlin" chosen?
After the Ethereum Istanbul upgrade, we ran out of names for the planned network upgrade. It is recommended to use the name of the city where Devcon was held in the past for upgrading. Berlin was the site of Devcon 0, and the next upgrade will be called London, which is also the site of Devcon 1.
What do I need to do as an Ethereum user or Ethereum holder?
