Quick Facts

➤ The Berlin upgrade is ready to deploy!

➤ Our progress is very fast: the first upgraded testnet is Ropsten, which is scheduled to be upgraded on March 10. The mainnet upgrade is scheduled for April 14th.

➤ If you are running an Ethereum node, you should upgrade to the Berlin-compatible version for testnet as soon as possible, and the version for mainnet by April 7th.

➤ See details below of the Berlin-compatible client versions and EIPs incorporated into this upgrade.

After many months of planning, the Berlin upgrade is finally here! Following the Istanbul and Muir Glacier upgrades, the Berlin upgrade is planned to be deployed at block height 12,244,000 of the Ethereum mainnet. We expect it to go live around Wednesday 14th April 2021, but the exact date may change due to variable block times.

client version

The upgrade will run on the Ropsten, Goerli and Rinkeby testnets before being deployed to the mainnet. The whole online arrangement is as follows:

Ethereum node operators need to upgrade their nodes before forking blocks of the network they want to participate in. Given the variability of block times, it is recommended to upgrade a few days before the expected date. See below for the corresponding upgrade version for each client.

client version

To be compatible with the Berlin upgrade, node runners need to upgrade the version of the client they are running. The following table lists the version of each client that supports the Berlin upgrade in the Ethereum network, including testnet and mainnet.

Note that TurboGeth and EthereumJS will not release versions for the first testnet, but they will release versions before the mainnet launch. We will update this article when their version is released. Trinity is against it and will not support the upgrade of Berlin.

  • EIP included in Berlin upgrade

The Berlin upgrade will introduce the following EIPs to the Ethereum network:

  • ➤ EIP-2565: ModExp Gas Cost ModExp Gas Cost

Reduced cost of ModExp (0x00..05) precompilation

  • ➤ EIP-2929: Increase gas consumption of state access opcodes

Increase the gas consumption of SLOAD, CALL, BALANCE, EXT* and SELFEDESTRUCT opcodes used for the first time in a transaction

  • ➤ EIP-2718: Contains transaction envelopes for type

Introduces a new transaction type, which is an envelope that provides support for multiple transaction types.

FAQ

➤ EIP-2930: Optional Access List

For more on these EIPs, see Ethereum Cat Herder's Berlin upgrade overview article.

Q: As an Ethereum user or ETH holder, is there anything I can do?

Q: Why "Berlin"

A: After the upgrade in Istanbul, we ran out of network upgrade names that we had set. Someone suggested we name it after the city where Devcon was held, so we did. Berlin is the city that hosted Devcon 0, and the name of the next upgrade is the city that hosted Devcon 1 - London.

A: If you use an exchange (such as Coinbase, Kraken, or Binance), a web wallet service (such as Metamask, MyCrypto, or MyEtherWallet), a mobile wallet service (such as Coinbase Wallet, Status.im, or Trust Wallet), or a hardware wallet (such as Ledger, Trezor, or KeepKey), you don’t need to do anything unless your exchange or wallet provider tells you to take extra steps.

Q: What happens if I am a miner or node operator and do not participate in the upgrade?

A: Download the latest version of the Ethereum client listed above.

Q: What does network upgrade mean on Ethereum?

A: If you are using the Ethereum client but do not upgrade to the latest version (listed above), your client will synchronize the blockchain data before the fork after the upgrade. You'll be stuck on an incompatible chain that follows the old rules, and won't be able to send ETH or operate on the upgraded Ethereum network.

Q: What happens during the network upgrade process?

A: A network upgrade means a change in the underlying protocol of Ethereum, creating new rules to improve the system. The decentralized nature of blockchain systems makes network upgrades more difficult. The smooth progress of the blockchain network upgrade requires collaboration and communication with the community and various Ethereum client developers.
